Coaching & Mentoring

Whether coaching or mentoring, there is partnering in a learning relationship

What is coaching?

There are many definitions of coaching. I like this one: “Coaching is unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them.” (Whitmore, 2017)

What is mentoring?

The terms “coaching” and “mentoring” are often used interchangeably. Mostly, a mentoring relationship is one where someone shares their knowledge and experience – but it often reveals learning opportunities for both participants

My vastly oversimplified distinction?

In Coaching you ask; in Mentoring you tell

What do I do?

In practice, most people want a combination of mentoring and coaching from me. But it is also quite usual not to know what you want or how I might help you. While I have a lot of experience, you’ll still want to know whether it is right for you.

That is why I will always want an introductory discussion – sometimes called a “chemistry” session – so that we can get to know each other a little and see how I can help, and we can agree what sort of relationship we’ll have and for how long.

Coaching and mentoring is a continuing process of self-development. To advance my own skills, in 2024 I am participating in the Henley Business School Professional Certificate in Executive Coaching.

How do I work? What’s my style?

The short answer is – it depends. On you. The relationship of client and coach is sometimes described as being like a driver and a navigator. That is useful, if one remembers that, while the navigator can help facilitate, it is the driver who ultimately has control over the destination and how to get there.

There are various coaching techniques one can use. I don’t stick with one technique, but am flexible and adapt to see what works for you in the moment - to work in an integrated style of coaching.

The conversations are for you. I will help you reflect on the issue, aim to bring some new perspective to it, perhaps to reframe it, and help you move forward.

Who can be my client?

On one view, probably anyone. Of course, you will want to feel you can get on with me, that you can trust me and feel safe in your discussions with me.

The reality is that many of my clients are attracted to my extensive experience as a lawyer developing and leading a highly regarded, successful team. So, the majority of my clients are lawyers at various stages of their career – some in their early years through to some in very senior leadership roles.

But many of the issues people want to discuss with me arise in all kinds of careers: how to advance, being over-burdened, confidence concerns, conflicting time pressures, imposter syndrome, difficult conversations, time management, and more.

Where do I work as a coach/mentor?

I am usually based in London or West Sussex. Most of my coaching/mentoring meetings have been in London. But I am happy to travel, and of course, where appropriate, our discussions can be on-line.
